Print sizes, worked out
A print shop or a form asks for centimetres; a picture has pixels. This mode does the arithmetic for every file, shows it in the plan, and writes the DPI so the file opens at the right size in a print dialog or a word processor.
To change the DPI number without touching a single pixel, use Change DPI instead.
Questions about resize image in cm
How are cm turned into pixels?
Pixels are the size in inches times the DPI, rounded: 3.5 × 4.5 cm at 200 DPI is 276 × 354 pixels. The plan prints the result for every file.
Does a higher DPI make the photo better?
No. DPI does not add detail. It tells a printer how big to print the pixels you have. The same pixels at 300 DPI print half the width they print at 150.
Is the DPI saved in the file?
Yes, for JPEG (JFIF density, and the EXIF resolution when the file has one) and PNG (the pHYs chunk). WebP has no standard place for it, and its rows say so.
What if my photo is not the print's shape?
It is cropped around the focal point to the print shape. Drag the point in the matrix, or switch the target to Pad to keep the whole picture with a border.
